Why HappyTree?

In 2006, when I was dreaming up my yoga studio, I knew one thing for sure: I wanted to create a place that was joyful and non-intimidating, where people could feel free to express their genuine, authentic self.

It had taken years for me to pluck up the courage to go to my first yoga class in a studio and when I finally did, it rapidly changed my life for the better. The practice of yoga put me in touch with an overflowing current of vitality and joy, the likes of which I had never experienced in my adult life. What I later came to know is that it put me in touch with my true nature and that everyone’s true nature is the same: peace, love, harmony, happiness. I wanted to create a place where people could discover that.

“Yoga is the uniting of consciousness in the heart. United in the heart, consciousness is steadied, then we abide in our true nature – joy.”

-Nischala Joy Devi, from her interpretation of the Yoga Sutras,
“The Secret Power  of Yoga”

It was important to me to find a studio name that was relatable – not a Sanskrit word that could be alienating and hard to pronounce. HappyTree stuck right away because even a two-year-old knows the words “Happy” and “Tree”. “Happy” points to our true nature and the tree is one of the most iconic postures in yoga. Add to that my commitment to an environmentally friendly studio (we later went on to win the McGill Green Business award in the small business category) and exposing our students to the many “branches” of yoga, and the name HappyTree took on more than one meaning.

We are experiencing a shift in human evolution and now is the time for all of us to gather and grow into our authentic power. HappyTree is the place, not only to attend inspiring, personalized yoga classes, but to connect with your authentic power by working through physical, mental and emotional limits within a safe, warm and supportive community. We welcome beginners and experienced practitioners alike to come in and discover the true heart and real purpose of yoga: re-membering who you are.

In joy,

Melanie, founder and director of HappyTree

“When we align our thoughts, emotions and actions with the highest part of ourselves, we are filled with enthusiasm, purpose and meaning. Life is rich and full. We have no thoughts of bitterness. We have no memory of fear. We are joyously and intimately engaged with our world. This is the experience of authentic power.”
